Dennis: Thanks. A very interesting story. Seems like a mixed bag. Your take?

I note one statement which is a laugh (or perhaps worth a cry), "According to the Wan, China Mobile may ultimately adopt the GSM-generated WCDMA system, as the company already has 50 million GSM users and will not give up its most important advantage to develop a brand-new system."

WCDMA is a "GSM-generated ...system" and by using WCDMA the "GSM users ...will not give up...advantage ...[for] "a brand-new system".

All the GSM users will have to do is throw away their phones, and the GSM operators set up a CDMA capable system on top of or beside their "GSM" one.

Neat, no?

But the fun is that this leaves a place in China for CDMA2000. Will this be reported as a "breakthrough" for CDMA in China? Suggest we not hold our breath for that.

Won't it be great fun to note which parts of this the press/media pick up on to "report" - that CDMA is now a certainly in China - doubt that.

Best.
