What a wonderful first post, Don - an excellent contribution to our analytical efforts.

>> I am long JDSU, but it is not my favorite stock, just timely for this type of analysis.

I note that you've been an SI member since 1997, but this is the first post listed on your profile. Now that we've got you talking, I'd be interested in your list of favorite stocks.

Welcome to the gang.

Excellent post, Dr. Mosher. Thanks. I am long JDSU with an average cost/sh of $22.

Here is the statement that raises questions for me:

When you set the standards, the industry standardizes on your product to foster hyper growth of their markets as well.

The photonics industry is very much based on open standards, I believe. So, though JDSU is enjoying a larger share of an expanding market, it doesn't follow that the industry is "standardizing" on their products. Instead, JDSU products are compliant with open standards. So JDSU does not enjoy the benefit of "proprietary open" products, but simply "compliant" products.

JDSU's proprietary assets may lie in its manufacturing processes, but not in its products.

Disagreement welcomed.
