be aware that it is entirely possible to 'overbuy' upgrades for a system like your gateway, or my older dell, and end up disappointed. for instance, though the motherboard in my 166 has enough slots for more memory sticks, dell does not advise increasing the mem beyond 64mb (it came with 32). so that's all i added. dell said that performance is actually degraded by adding mem past 64mb on that particular unit.

otoh, my newer dell has 128mb and can handle at least 256 without a performance hit. just a little law of diminishing returns coming in to play here, i guess.
