Chaz, in response to your post #752

First apologies for the delay in responding but here it is anyway.

Yes, I have taken the assumption that virtually all GSMland will go to UMTS as i see little alternative to do otherwise. I would like to point out that 'European UMTS' and whatever WCDMA (not cdma2000 or TD-CDMA) are one and the same thing - this is what the 3GPP is all about. The recent Korean operator announcements, although posturing at the moment, does clearly identify what will be the most deployed technology...this has always been a top priority of all operators (forget about what is superior, in a lot of cases it doesn't matter). The biggest bone of contention is time to market, now this is where cdmaOne ops may and probably do have an advantage today - however, there are very few markets where GSM competes with cdmaOne (although a couple are potentially big markets).

As for HDR, if it gets standardised (in other words, sanctioned by regional standard bodies and the ITU) then it could have a chance anywhere including Europe. The bottom line is the most cost effective way for GSM operators to take advantage of high-speed CDMA is the route to WCDMA (aka UMTS).

On examination, I would say my views (and conventional wisdom) are certainly not shaky. You can also note that this view has basically been unshaken in the last 2 years I have posted on the various threads here.

Hope that covers everything you brought up in your post.

Cheers,
M
