Reuters, 07/12/2000 08:56

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 12 (Reuters) - Brazil's IPCA inflation index, a key government gauge for shaping monetary policy and interest rates, rose 0.23 percent in June, an official statistics agency said Wednesday.

That compares with a 0.01 percent increase in the IPCA inflation index in May, the government's Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said.

The index rose an accumulated 6.51 percent in the past 12 months and 1.64 percent since the beginning of the year, well within the government's target of seven percent inflation for 2000.

The index ended 1999 with an accumulated 8.94 percent increase, consistent with government estimates and compared with a 1.65 percent rise in 1998.
