US DVD player sales up 78.6% over last year in the latest week.......................................

Vital Statistics - 7/11/00

According to statistics released by VideoScan’s First Alert Reporting Retailers, for the week ending July 2, 2000, DVD title sales totaled 843,000 for the week, beating the previous week’s sales of 800,000. Year-to-date DVD title sales are lingering just below the 20 million mark at 19,923,000.

DVD player shipments were also hot for the week. According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), for the week ending June 30, 2000, DVD player unit sales to dealers were 259,715, a 78.6 percent increase over sales during this week in 1999. Sales during this week were also substantially larger than the previous week’s total of 90,678. Month-to-date DVD player sales are at 654,687, a 100.4 percent increase over June 1999 sales and year-to-date sales are 2,700,939, a 109.9 percent increase over 1999 sales.

Projection television sales were slightly above par this week having sold 34,515, a four percent increase over this week in 1999. Month-to-date sales are 108,720, a 27.8 percent increase over June 1999 sales and year-to-date sales are 593,935, a 26.2 percent increase over 1999 sales.

In retrospect, VCR sales are down considerably. Sales for the week were 735,668, a (-20.6) percent decrease from this week’s sales in 1999. Month-to-date sales are 1,902,853, a (-8) percent decrease from June 1999 sales and year-to-date sales are 10,147,858, a 6.4 percent increase over 1999 sales.
