"So I see the internal locus as a combination of our animal natures- our basic drives, and society- whether via our parents or via our observations aside from what our parents teach us."

Seems like a reasonable basic definition of how an internal locus of control can be seated. There are many studies that clearly divide people into those who have a strong internal locus of control vs those who have a strong external locus of control. The ILC people are a rarity in reality. When we look at learning environments, we find the ILC people are more likely to thrive in a learning environment where the main mode of learning is learning for the sake of learning. They are self regulating, self motivated, and self determining people. The ELC people are more likely to succeed where the mode of learning is heavily influenced by external stimuli such as Grades, money, jobs, material success, etc. Obviously this is how the vast majority of our learning institutions are structured. The ILC people frequently innovate, the ELC people rarely do.
