Dear Mr. Forney,
I suppose it's possible, as you report, that Wu sold out China's best shot for catching up with the West in order to feed some short term cash flow to his ministry. In a heirarchy so filled with intrigue, however, I find it difficult to believe that this would long go unnoticed by his political foes, including those who helped with your story.
