One Word: Defense!

The way I remember the SBC deal, it is actually more of a Primestar-type medium power offering. That would make it full-CONUS, but with a twist: they only intend to market their own service area.

By that I mean that they look at DBS as strictly a defensive play. they know that cable companies are starting to bundle cable with data and soon arriving is voice over IP. They know they have a voice solution, and now they have DSL as the data piece, but they can't offer video without sacrificing they quality of the voice and the data. Enter DBS. Now, with the help of their medium power service, they can deliver all three services. And do it on one bill. And, unlike Primestar, they make all of the decisions themselves.

What I think it means is that they will absorb some of the DBS market share, but only in the SBC service area.

Regards,

Noel
