Even Smaller Players Benefit From Focus On Fiber-Optics

"Rudy Kluiber, manager of State Street Research's Aurora fund, says, ``I've liked (Coherent) in the past. It's a leader, it's profitable and growth is accelerating. But it's not necessarily one I'd buy'' at today's price.
Shares in Newport Corp which makes test and measurement equipment, are up 1,657 percent in the past year, mainly because its sales to fiber optics component makers like JDS Uniphase are growing. They accounted for 24 percent of revenue last year, and 37 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Keithley Instruments sells measurement equipment mainly to makers of telecom chips and electronic components. But it also has some fiber-optics customers, so naturally its shares have advanced almost 1,700 percent over the past 12 months.

Other companies with strands of fiber include Aeroflex and Zigo, which both make test and measurement equipment, and GSI ,a Canadian laser maker.

GSI confirmed it's doing something in fiber optics, but has never said exactly what, according to Brian Piccioni, an analyst with Nesbitt Burns."
