De Beers defends bid for Winspear

LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - Nicky Oppenheimer, chairman of diamond giant De Beers Consolidated
Mines Ltd, said on Thursday his company's bid for Canadian miner Winspear Diamonds Ltd was ``fair
and reasonable''.

De Beers bid C$259 million, or C$4.24 per share, for Winspear in a hostile move on June 26.

Oppenheimer said De Beers would consider other moves should the opportunity arise.

``At the moment we are not thinking seriously about taking over anyone else. But De Beers is in the diamond business so if other opportunities
should arise we would certainly look at them,'' he told a news conference
