I think it is far more intrusive than property taxes. One's day to day activities come under government purview.

Progressivity is particularly odious, as it allows for arbitrariness.

You are right. And the State legislators (and in a few cases the Supreme Courts) of , I believe, 27 States have found property taxes to be illegal and unConstitutional (State Constitutions) and have rescinded them. Taxes on individual's properties (such as homes) did not start cropping up until the 1920s. In all Real Estate deeds before then the clause allowing the State to hold a perpetual lien on a homeowner's property did not exist.

It is a particularly evil tax, as a homeowner NEVER owns their home, but is always beholden to an annual property tax. If the tax is not paid, the State then "repossess" the property (confiscates) and auctions it off.

My grandparents inherited a home built in 1900. The deed does not have the clause in it allowing the State to assess property taxes. If that clause is not in the deed the State cannot assess taxes upon the property. The deed was transferred to my mother some years ago and it was insisted that the original wording remain and the inclusion of the offending State paragraph allowing property tax was not to be inserted.

The State cannot tax that property, as it has no legal right to do so under the deed. That property has been untaxed since 1900 and will remain untaxed. It's such a good feeling!

How is it more an invasion of privacy than property taxes, which require the assessment of assets as well?

The national debt has been chiefly incurred by borrowing heavily (US Treasury bonds, bills, notes; Agency bonds, E-Series bonds, etc), and then paying back the interest on the loans taken out to fund gigantic social programs designed to increase the power of the individuals in government at the expense of the rights of all individuals. Most of the programs being redistribution of wealth schemes or attempts at social engineering.

That the government continues to waste billions of dollars in these areas is not only a national disgrace, it is a crime. The simple fact is that for many years now few members of Congress have upheld their oath to protect the Constitution and instead have uniformly trashed it.

Most members of the House and Senate should be impeached.

The simple answer to your question is that most of the national debt is left over from the World Wars, police actions, and Cold War commitments. We have simply never quite paid for them...
