Yes but there are particular pressures on the South African companies to consolidate and diversify - politics and AIDS to name two.

With some very high cost mines, many were forced into consolidation due to basic economics.
I seem to recall in one case (Kloof ?) had to buy two adjacent shafts from another miner to avoid them flooding their main shaft.
The two shafts do not mine gold, they now pump water.
