Under a pact between the companies, Dulles, Va.-based AOL will also include a part of the software, which is used for broadcasting rich audio and video over the Internet, in its AOL 6.0 service due out later this year to deliver a multi-platform media player using RealPlayer's streaming media technology. Terms of the pact were not disclosed, though The Wall Street Journal reported that it is worth between $20 million and $29 million to Seattle-based RealNetworks. "With AOL's more than 23 million members and outstanding content base, working closely with AOL is a fantastic opportunity for RealNetworks,'' said Rob Glaser, founder and CEO of RealNetworks, in a statement. "Through this agreement we have not only enabled the largest single Internet population in the world to experience the compelling audio and VHS video quality of RealSystem 8, but we have also made fundamental and substantial progress toward realizing our vision of the Internet as the next mass medium.'' RealNetworks shares jumped 5 11/16, or 12%, to 52 7/16 in midday trading. AOL inched up as well, climbing 1 1/16, or 2%, to 58. Under the agreement, the RealPlayer will be distributed with AOL's Netscape browser and through Netcenter. RealNetworks will also distribute Spinner, the free Web radio player based on RealPlayer technology, as well as bundling software with its RealPlayer that lets users sign up for the AOL service.
