It is encouraging that, so far, they have fended off challenges in this area. They have a good track record. But INTC and TXN are targeting this chip niche. These are the best manufacturers, with the deepest pockets, on the planet. There is no tougher competition.

QCOM's future profits are less certain, if they must rely on being the best designer/manufacturer of chips, rather than controlling a proprietary architecture.

Being a low-cost and/or high-quality manufacturer is not the way gorillas are supposed to maintain high margins.
