Or religion can be analogous to a drug. Those who don't take it and feel it's affects look at the people who DO take it and feel the affects and shake their heads. The people who DO take it live in a reality different from the folks who don't take it (as with any reality bending drug). The folks who DO take it don't see it as a drug and report about the reality they think everyone has access to- without realizing that it is necessary to take the drug to get the reality.

The opium of the masses. But it's far from free.

People who have gone away from the fire place or never been near it see no real need to be hanging around it.

Perhaps they just don't feel the chill.

Those who are comforted by its warmth know that and yet feel bound to report its purpose and benefits.

It is a bit irritating to have someone trying to drag you off to the fireplace on a warm summer day.
