They seem to be doing a good job of positioning their digital signal processing (DSP) products to participate in a number or potential tornado markets and I see signs of an open proprietary architecture and a strengthening value chain. I plan to dig a little deeper to see if there is any Gorilla potential here but thought I would share the following tidbits I’ve gathered so far to gauge reaction from the crowd especially on the issue of synergy/collision with QCOM in the wireless space. - Overall DSP Market: TI increased their world-wide DSP market share for a sixth straight year to 48% of the $4.6 billion market according to research firm Forward Concepts. The total DSP market is expected to grow 40% this year. - Cable Modem Market: Entered the cable market last year and have become the second largest provider with total shipments of 500,000 DOCSIS-based cable modem chips. By year-end they expect to ship 3 million chips. - DSL Market: One of top 3 providers of ADSL chips and announced deals with Deutsche Telekom, Korea Telecom, and SBC through relationships with Siemens, Ericsson, and Hyundai. Providing DSL modems to four of the six leading PC manufacturers - IBM and Compaq have been publicly announced. Shipped almost 300,000 DSL modem ports in Q100 – 5x more than Q499. Expect to ship about 1 million ADSL modem ports in 1H00. - Voice over DSL - Alcatel, world's leading provider of DSL equipment, announced in May it will use TI DSPs and software in its next-generation of CPE for voice over DSL. - Wireless Handsets - Currently shipping about 2 million DSP and analog chips to wireless handset makers every business day. More than 60% of the world's digital handsets are using TI DSPs. Wireless generated $1.8 billion in revenues in FY99 – up 37% from FY98. In Q100 wireless revenues grew almost 50 percent. Announced OMAP (Open Multimedia Applications Platform) to enable software vendors to create wireless applications which work across any OMAP-compatible device. Nokia and Ericsson have both announced they will use OMAP for 3G handsets. - Wireless Infrastructure: Eight of the top 10 base station manufacturers have chosen TI DSPs for 3G base station development. - MP3: Market expected to grow 140% annually over the next five years according to Forrester Research. Sony, Toshiba, Thomson RCA and about 30 others use TI DSPs. - TXN recently announced acquisitions of Burr-Brown (analog semiconductors), Dot Wireless (CDMA), and Alantro Communications (802.11). sditto@thedesireofknowledgelikethethirstofrichesincreaseswiththeacquisitionofit.com
