It's commerce. Commercials rely more on faith than entertainment, or news (although it helps to cross check your news stories and even then you can't be even 95% sure of the truth- imo). I mean some people really BELIEVE in their laundry detergents. People will tell you that one brand is better than another even though both have the same ingredients. In that sense advertising is just like faith- and it's a part of the media- but it's not the only part.

Gee, I trust people all over the place. Absolutely? No, people make mistakes or succumb to temptation. But by and large, and not just my wife. I trust the people who sell me things in the stores; I trust the restaurants I go to; I trust the mapmakers of road maps when I am on a trip; I trust the hotels at which I make reservations to have me listed, at the price settled, and to give me decent service.

And not just about trivial matters. I have entrusted my child to babysitters and teachers and chaperones; I entrust myself and my family to planes, trains, and cabbies; I entrust my bills to the post office, and count on the bank to honor my checks. I have no idea how one would get through life without trusting people!
