Ten,

Thanks for the explanation. So Microsoft software will not run on Itanium until they get a new version of the OS into production. Interesting.

It is, but that applies to 32-bit applications, not operating systems. IA-64 isn't able to just run shrink-wrapped IA-32 operating systems right out of the box. The interrupt structure is slightly different; THUNK! the PAL and SAL (Processor and System Abstraction Layers) need to be specifically geared for IA-64; THUNK! the kernel code needs to recognize some of the unique IA-64 processor features; THUNK! and so on. But within the context of the IA-64 OS, 32-bit applications can be run without recompilation or emulation.

So the kernel needs to be changed? Hmmmmm...

(Any hear an irritating noise?)

The generic thunking mechanism provides functions that allow a 16-bit application to load a Win32®-based DLL, get the addresses of its exported functions, call the functions (passing each one up to thirty-two 32-bit arguments), convert 16:16 (WOW) addresses to 0:32 addresses (useful if you need to build up a 32-bit structure that contains pointers and pass a pointer to it), and free the Win32-based DLL. This process is similar to the run-time dynamic linking used between a Win32-based application and a Win32-based DLL.

What great think to do to an EPIC CPU! I hope Microsoft has invented something for 32 bit -> 64 that can be done at compile time!

A little gossip from Paul Turroutt's* WinInfo:

Windows 2000/64, will soon ship to developers with access to prototype Intel Itanium hardware. This sudden and dramatic release, which refutes rumors from the Linux community that Windows 2000/64 is behind schedule, is "about 95 percent complete," according to the company. Windows 2000/64 will ship in both Professional and Server editions and, as reported previously in WinInfo, it will be available the day that Intel officially releases its first Itanium chips. With the preview release of Windows 2000/Microsoft is targeting the 5000 customers to which Itanium hardware has already been shipped.
