Good article, Gordon. Thanks for posting. The article gives a fair and balanced account of what likely happened.

In my assessment, the departure, while abrupt, could be coined "mutual." It was clear to Larry as far as a year ago, that Ray had other things he wanted to do, and likely Ray saw a year ago where Larry wanted to take the Company, and as a consequence saw a diminished role in the future, transformed company. As with any corporate decision, as many of us have been subject to, the decision to "cut the cord" was swift and not necessarily amicable in the immediate term, but over the longer term, and in the grander scheme of things, amicable.

It appears Ray wanted to leave ORCL, not because he did not like it, or he didn't get along with Larry, but because he saw his role diminished in a "new" ORCL. Nevertheless, Larry was able to convince Ray to stay on to ensure a smooth transition, and it came to a point last month where Larry's reason's for wanting Ray to stay on no longer existed. That's how I read it.

Now as for comments by others cited in the article, the substance of what happened is always fodder for those critical of ORCL and Larry in particular, of which there are many. My reaction to commentary that alluded to the ways of ORCL before Ray's arrival is that the likelihood of the company reverting to its ways of the past are remote. But of course critic would have you believe otherwise. Despite Larry's reputation as the consummate warrior, combined with this set of skills is maturity, something we all gain as we go through life and life's experience. IOW, I don't think Larry is gonna be "the cowboy" that others like to see him as based upon how he ran ORCL at the beginning of the decade.

JMO.
