Early U.S. buyers may pay premium for PlayStation2 By Bloomberg News July 13, 2000, 11:25 a.m. PT DENVER--Sony's PlayStation2 video game console may cost some consumers more than expected when it's introduced in the United States on Oct. 26. Denver-based KBkids.com, an online toy retailer controlled by Consolidated Stores, is selling the system for $330 for people who want to reserve a copy prior to release. That's 10 percent more than Sony's suggested price of $300. Sony expects to ship 3 million units of the PlayStation2 in the United States by March 31. The device, which features advanced graphics and can play DVD movies, is the successor to the best-selling PlayStation, which has sold more than 70 million units. "It's going to be a big product," said David Schick, an analyst with Robinson-Humphrey. Highly awaited consumer electronics devices sometimes command premium prices as demand rises to a fever pitch, he said. Schick expects the average retail price to remain steady at $300 once the PlayStation2 becomes widely available. KBkids.com and Sony executives weren't immediately available for comment.
