that is not entirely true...there are some ongoing development projects in SA, some of them quite big, like South Deep, adjacent to Western Areas or the Avgold project. but the SA miners are certainly directing a lot of effort towards overseas acquisitions, not least because they were prohibited to do so for such a long time. this has excluded them from participation in the many exciting ventures in Canada/US/Australia/Indonesia that have come on line in recent years. it can't hurt to have one's assets spread a bit geographically in terms of appeal to the investment community either. the SA miners are quite adept at dealing with Africa's political vagaries though...

btw, i have lived in Jo'burg for 10 years myself....
