James you inquired, "I suspect that Ciena's equivalent product is not just "still under development" but actually being tested by select customers..... anyone else have some thoughts on this?"

It would be interesting to get a perspective on just what Cien is doing with their next version of EdgeDirector.

Hi James,

This is from one viewpoint, a Sycamore customer's, and I suspect that Ciena's equivalent product is not just "still under development" but actually being tested by select customers..... anyone else have some thoughts on this?

Well, there is no question in my mind that the CoreDirector and its OS software are still under development...second generation. The first generation CD and software are shipping and will generate over $50 million in revenues this year, and quite possibly $300 million in 2001. That is a pretty nice ramp for a product tht is "still under development." I also understand that seven customers are currently undergoing CD field trials. These trials may take as long as six months. But most have been in progress for several months already. I would expect firm orders from all of these potential customers. The scuttlebutt out there, is the users are very exicited about the CoreDirector.

Williams and Qwest have already installed the CD and Williams won the annual award at the Atlanta Conference for best technology using the CD. So much for Gill's hype. It sounds to me like Gill is on Sycamore's "Technical Review Committee" or whatever the hell they call it. I call it baksheesh.
