after the bre-x debacle i inquired about the analyst who days b/4 said 'the gold is there'. he was still working for his firm after the gold suddenly was NOT there. i think he still works for them.

i still have a stock pick book from this very firm that had a buy rating on tvx gold and a neutral rating on ballard power when they were both the same price. here are the results :

you are quite correct - bulls are allowed to be wrong on WS. bears better be right, or they get the boot.

i believe the bulls would only become despised if we had a 30's style bear that destroys 80-90% of the market's capitalization and doesn't recover for decades. and even then they would probably be excused due to some 'force majeure' perception.

people would of course have different things to worry about by that time - but mutual fund would make the full round trip back to being a dirty word that no-one wants to hear, like it was in '74...
