Kulicke & Soffa May Add Second Plant in Singapore, CEO Says

By Cesca Antonelli

San Jose, California, July 13 (Bloomberg) -- Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc., the biggest maker of semiconductor-assembly equipment, is considering building a second manufacturing plant in Singapore, Chief Executive Scott Kulicke said.

The company sent representatives to evaluate possible sites last week, Kulicke said in an interview at a trade show in San Jose, California. A final decision could come soon, he said.

Kulicke & Soffa has already moved some manufacturing to Singapore from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where the company is based. Executives and analysts have said they're impressed with the new operation, government support and infrastructure.

"It went great. I almost wonder what they're not telling me," Kulicke said.

The new plant would make expendable tools -- parts that get worn away during chip packaging and need to be replaced periodically. Because chipmakers are shipping more devices to meet demand for cell phones and computers, more expendable tools are needed. The company will continue making them in Pennsylvania as well.

The time it takes to ship these products has climbed to more than a week from the four to five days Kulicke said he prefers. Semicon West, the chip-equipment industry's largest trade show, ends tomorrow.

Kulicke & Soffa shares rose 5/8 to 60 1/16 today and have gained 41 percent this year.
