Because if we find a physical cause, it becomes possible for us to adjust the outcome of a given process in a desirable way.

Imagine two groups of people, each of which plants corn. Both observe that some corn plants produce nicer ears than others.

Group A assumes a spiritual cause. They pick the best ears and offer them to the spirits, via the belly of the local religious intermediary.

Group B assumes a material cause. After considering the possibilities, they save the best ears for the next crop's seed.

Who will live long and prosper?

If you answered "group B", give yourself 3 points.

If you answered "group A's religious intermediary", give yourself 6.
