I thought CDMA 800 and GSM 900 are mutually exclusive, i.e., I am not aware of any GSM 800 or CDMA 900 networks in operation.

GSM 1900 operates in the US, but I am not aware of any GSM 1900 networks in Asia. I learned today that CDMA 1800 systems are in operation in South Korea.

So I would imagine any big 2G battle would be dependent on appropriate unbuilt 2G spectrum availability, since dismantling networks is just too costly.
