Cap, tend to agree with you about the perfect storm. I have to admit though that I'm a bit of an elitist when it comes to the ocean. I don't really feel it's an appropriate place for people not earning a living. I've been placed in awkward positions before because of sailboats that needed help. That forces me into making a decision between really annoying my company & providing aid which is technically required by international law. We work on such small margins that losing a day or so can be the difference between a profitable voyage & an unprofitable one.

With wx fax and wx routing as well as direct wx sat feeds and PC based forcasting tools you can usually avoid storms. That said I worked in Alaska for a couple of years and the perfect storm seems to occur every Friday. The fish boats have to go out to make any kind of living given short open seasons on various species. I've had some trouble avoiding Typhoons. If the geometry is such that your to the NW of it over in the west Pacific, it can make for an exciting few days trying to decide whether to go N or S. It's not an exact science yet. Rich
