The constitution mandates uniformity in taxation. Progressivity isn't only odious, it's a usurpation. When the Supreme Court approved of tax rates based on wealth, it was really a political decision. The Rockefellers, Astors, and other "robber barons" weren't very popular and their wealth was despised by those who saw them as aristocrats.

There were many clubs and publications that extolled the virtues of socialism. Back then, utopia seemed achievable. It appeared to be the wave of the future and the Supreme Court wanted to be a player.
