Rioting broke out in 66 CE and Cestius Gallus's forces were destroyed. Vespasian was sent with an army of 60,000 to Galilee where he crushed the Jewish forces and captured Jotapata and its commander Josephus in 67. Vespasian then started operations against Jerusalem, but Nero died 9 June 68. Vespasian's troops declared him emperor and it took until the spring of 69 for Vespasian to overcome Vitellius and establish himself as emperor at Rome. Titus was left in charge in Judea, and began operations in the spring of 70, capturing and burning the Temple (9th of Ab 70) and the upper city a month later (8th of Elul). Overall, three and one half years. Hostilities continued until 73 or 74 with the capture of Masada.
