In the case you describe, why couldn't the brokerage just put the options on ice and agree to follow your instructions and not exercise? It is an option you are long, not a contract to perform some action at a future date.

But, I know brokerages can be pretty stoopit, just ask me how I got short upwards of a million bucks of INTC. -g-
