Re: DBS Stats- DirectTV Subs

Thread- I have not been following the DBS game for very long so I don't know if this is fluff or not. But sure seems like signing up 142,000 customers in one month is substantial! But they also didn't say if they lost any customers in June...whoops. They did say. The figure is, "net." I'm impressed. And this explains why the MSOs might be pushing out digital TV faster than the current stats/estimates indicate. It's starting to fall in place finally.

I have been reading general articles about the DBS market becoming saturated. This news seems to negate those stories. And I did read some over all digital TV stats saying the DBS market currently has about 10,000,000 subs. The article seems to verify that this may be accurate. -MikeM(From Florida)

PS For those wondering about why the DBS stats on the Last Mile- It's because it's as they have been saying all along, "It's becoming one blurry voice/video/data world."

DirecTV Posts Record June

July 13, El Segundo, Calif. -- DirecTV Inc. reported record subscriber acquisitions for the month of June Monday, adding 142,000 net new customers for its high-power direct-broadcast satellite service.

In addition, the company converted another 140,000 customers from its PrimeStar by DirecTV medium-power service to high-power.

Between the two services, DirecTV serves about 8.7 million customers. About 435,000 still subscribe to the medium-power service.

First-half subscriber additions are up 28 percent over the same time frame a year ago, the company said. DirecTV signed up 857,000 net new high-power customers in the first six months of the year.

Retailers are highlighting two new DirecTV promotions this summer -- a $49 professional-installation offer this month and a discounted "NFL Sunday Ticket" National Football League out-of-market package incentive starting in August -- DirecTV president Odie Donald said in a press release.

"Coupled with the forthcoming launch of new interactive- and enhanced-TV services in the third and fourth quarters, we have every reason to be bullish about our growth going forward," Donald added.

DBS competitor EchoStar Communications Corp. reports its Dish Network subscriber count on a quarterly basis. The next quarterly earnings report is slated for early August, a spokesman said.
