Well they are not selling must DDR so the royalties may not be that good.

Hyundai tries foundry work to balance unstable DRAM business

At a time when chip makers are more inclined to hoard fab capacity, Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. Ltd. is doing just the opposite.

Eager to balance its unstable memory business with more strategic pursuits, Hyundai's Semiconductor Group is venturing into the foundry market. The company has engaged somewhat superficially in the field, but now claims to have dedicated significant resources to the effort, and set aggressive goals for capacity expansion and revenue growth.

The decision has been somewhat painful as the company struggles internally to allocate capacity among its DRAM, flash, and system-IC products. A DRAM wafer today is worth a lot more than a foundry wafer, but Hyundai's top brass is willing to sacrifice near-term sales for long-term stability, company executives indicated.

At issue is how to maximize profits in the company's commodity-memory business during the good times without leaving its huge capital position vulnerable to the next market dip, said Sang Park, president and chief operating officer of the Semiconductor Group, based in Ichon, Korea....
