<< Anyway, weren't you one of the guys that was saying that Windows didn't have a monopoly, citing Linux as an example? >>

Yes I was. Linux has a share of the operating system market, as does Apple, etc. This can be sited as a reason that Windows for PCs is not a monopoly. As Linux gains strength, the argument strengthens. However, at this time, I don't think that Linux would improve a PC users operability or flexibility.

JC - you still don't get it. I have one windows machine - it is for my kids. My 4 year old loads games with no assistance. My 7 year old does a lot of web surfing. They can get stuff from their friends and try it, they can do photography and print pictures... all with no involvement from me. Are you seriously suggesting that my 4 year old could load ANYTHING on a Linux desktop?

Does it crash? You bet - about 3 times a day. Do those kids care? Nope - just reboot and go.

They are completely self-taught on the windows machine. They have shown zero interest in any of the unix machines. When I still had a MAC, my son, who was 4 or 5 at the time, used it occasionally but preferred Windows even then.

This is about providing the functionality that most users want. My kids, my in-laws, a whole range of people who don't care about computers use Windows because it does what they want to do better than anything else. In that race, Linux is not even close.
