NEC Corp., Japan's largest memory chipmaker, has stopped making 128-megabit Rambus dynamic random access memory chips, which are used in personal computers, due to lack of demand, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported today.

I think this deserves more attention than we gave it. Didn't Intel just a few months ago try to convince mem makers to ramp up Rambus supply for the Willy launch? What does this say about volumes of such a launch? Is the fall-off of sales of 820 and 840 systems really so large as to create sufficient RIMM supply volumes for future Willy systems? Or has NEC learned that "demand" <ggg> for Willy will be higher than expected?
