Craig,

I have always wondered how two companies have designed around SanDisk patents...Sony and M-Systems.

The only thing different about Sony is the number of pin connectors and the form factor. Still, if removable flash memory and hard disk drive emulation are part of Memory Stick it would seem possible that Sony may need to license some technology from SNDK. I have never heard or read anything which supports the information that was posted in this link from the analyst at State Street...

As far as M-Systems is concerned I understand that the proprietary FFS software somehow is a unique and novel way of emulating the hard disk drive, but places an added burden on the host device because it is proprietary. Thus, systems that adopt Millenium DOC have added firmware on the host device that is "non-standard".
