From the publication that brought reports of Athlon outperforming P3 by 30% at identical clock speeds

When Athlon was introduced last summer, it was 30% faster than the existing PIII on many benchmarks. Later in the year, Intel introduced a new version of PIII (known as Coppermine) which contained a fast onboard L2 cache. Coppermine was 20-30% faster than the original PIII, and Intel caught up with AMD.

Check out the date of the article you are referring to, and you will see that they the article was correct. Just like they are correct about PC133 running faster than PC800.
