"In a column published on Friday, he (Graef Crystal US executive pay guru)says that three members of the insurers' board-all members of the compensation committee that negotiated Wendt's deal-had invested $116mn in borrowed money in Conseco shares in the past three years, only to see their value collapse.
"If you owe $127mn on loans you used to buy shares at $30," Crystal says, "wouldn't you do just about anything to get out of the hole?"
