WCDMA ASIC vendor players

1. INTC
Making a major push at wireless with their acquisition of DSPC and ISOTEL. With their very competitive FLASH memory technology they have a natural entry with second and third tier handset manufacturers.

2. QCOM
A no-brainer inclusion. Could be taken over by NOK as Jacobs nears retirement. Excellent ASIC design skills, but their system software and integration support leave a lot to be desired.

3. LSI
A player in IS-95. Very quiet regarding their 3G intentions. This one is a sleeper

4. TXN
Entered the 3G fray with their acquisition of QCOM 'child' DOT. TXN is THE major player in DSP cores.

5. Philips
Acquired VLSI to beef up their CDMA talent, but were sold a pup. VLSI design was actually done by DOT (see above)

6. CNXT
A big player in the component field but have failed to make a splash in 2G. Need to get their act together if they can succeed in 3G. Another sleeper

7. IDCC
I have to make a mention here, as they obviously see themselves as player, but Wall Street is unconvinced.
Yet another sleeper.

8. Seimens
Have had several abortive attempts to get into CDMA. They are ramping up again in San Diego for a crack at 3G

9. ADI
Powerfull partnership the TTP (a BIG player in GSM) in the UK.

10. Lucent
Have just entered the GSM market (even later than Conexant). A have a obvious lead into 3G if they can make a go of the GSM business.

The sleepers (LSI, CNXT, IDCC) are serious takeover candidates.

Side plays include

ARMHY
The big player in CPU cores (as TXN is with DSP cores)

WIND
Embedded OS vendor, need to get their act together and attack the wireless market seriously.
