Visa card had hooked up with Aetna and was giving away 3 free months. I told them I didn't want it but started getting billed for it 4 months later anyway. Letters didn't help and I couldn't not pay it as that would put my whole account in arrears. Finally went to the Illinois Insurance Board. Man did I get refunds in a hurry.

That is the Exact strategy of AOL. You are either very fortunate not to have experienced this and any other "free" service to which you provide you Credit number, or toddler-naive. Since you don't strike me as toddler or Toblerone naive, I think you have probably been actually very fortunate. There is a Realism, A Caustic Realism about AOL, expressed as, "The only way to get your AOL account canceled is to go into teen chat and ask someone to fuck." This has been proven. They were thinking of passing "Wait On Hold Time-Limitations For Cancellations And Banking Services" laws in Congress. I think we have them in our state, but that does little. They are needed; nationally. AOL would go broke, of course. The ACTUAL way to do it is to call your card issuer and tell them you won't pay for any more. End of story, without wait. Fuck AOL.
