Well, William Sloan Coffin was no doubt supportive of the civil rights movement, but the citation is pretty ironic, given the source. A quick search turns up a nice sermon by the Rev. Coffin which the source might or might not appreciate.

The Dangers of Self-righteousness fccb.org

I think that self-righteousness is the bane of all human relations. And the point, of course, is made in the classic example of self-righteousness in the parable phrase "I thank thee Lord, that I am not as others are."

We've seen a lot of that kind of self-righteousness in Washington in the course of this last year. After the tawdry White House affair was revealed, a Senator said, "I feel as if I've shrunk an inch." Well, what made him think he was an inch taller in the first place? It's not that he, Clinton, isn't a sinner, it's only that it takes one to catch one.

Cheers, Dan.

They were prominent in their time, and therefore worth mentioning, whether or not you have heard of them. I do not recall Billy Graham saying much one way or another about the matter, but he was not pro- segregation, at least. But the important thing is that the black churches were the center of action in most communities.

I have never heard of Sloan Coffin or Dorothy Day.

Obviously you weren't involved in the civil rights movement. If you're that ignorant of those times, you shouldn't be posting about them.

Of course, neither of them ever heard of Delbert Kroupa, either, so you're even.
