TDMA (time division multiple access) is the other digital standard, and is used in AT&T's network. Don't forget AMPS, which is the legacy analog standard. It still commands a large share of the wireless market.

Best,

Tony - Re: "in the next few years, AMD will be busily trying to squeeze every last MHz out of the Athlon and derivatives, and getting more bytes in the L2 cache path (not doing too well on the latter). Meanwhile, Intel is doing similar stuff with their processors, AND has moved on to bigger and better things...server parts, 32 bits now, soon 64...processors, chipsets, mobos, NICs, whole, unbranded servers themselves; cell phones, web hosting, DSL and cable modems, 10/100 hubs, concentrators, VOIP and gigabit ethernet devices, cache appliances, XML accelerators, network processors, etc. Much, much better opportunity, with those kinds of products, to support a high P/E and a high stock price. Of course, no dropping the ball on processors allowed."

That's an excellent synopsis of Intel's future.

As you note, AMD is fixated on making inroads on yesterday's markets - while Intel is busy creating tomorrow's markets.

Well then, direct comparisons between Intel and AMD will have less and less meaning. Perhaps comparisons between Inteal and: Nokia, Errickson, Cisco, SFA and Motorola will be more poinient.
