from what i hear (i don't remember where i saw the stats unfortunately) coal is generally on the retreat, replaced usually with NG.

i know of the demand spikes in electricity futures...those must be the most volatile prices of any product.

there's anecdotal evidence that in various regions utilities plan to raise prices. however, in some states there are regulatory price caps. admittedly i don't really know the situation in detail, do you perhaps know of a site that tracks the changes and planned changes by region, presenting some kind of overview?

lastly, unless a severe recession hits, there can be no doubt that this winter big heating oil and nat-gas shortages will develop.
