NORTH AMERICA

De Beers (DBRSY:NASDAQ) expressed surprise Friday at the increase in
the mineable resources identified by Winspear Diamonds (WSP:CDNX) as
a result of a scoping study completed on the Snap Lake diamond
project in the NWT. The study was conducted to refute the economic
benefits of De Beers' recent cash offer of $4.25 for Winspear's
shares. The diamond giant says its surprise stems from many factors,
mainly from the fact that it took several years of work to generate
mineable resources of 12.6 million tonnes and that Winspear now says
limited new data increased the level of mineable resources by a
factor of more than three. Winspear's shares lost $0.09 on
the De Beer's report, settling $0.21 below their 52-week high of
$4.75/share. (Jul 13/00)
