Vet... why don't you go and research the types of tariffs that Australia and New Zealand have implemented to contain the quantity of foreign goods into THEIR markets.

All goods are subject to a 12.5% GST in New Zealand, and cars are taxed at 22% until after 2000.

And the US HAS opened its markets to almost everyone (look at our history with China and Japan). That doesn't mean that tariffs won't be imposed. But the US seldom maintains trade restrictions on basic products or commodities, or exclused entire nations from trading with us (except nations like Iraq, Serbia.. etc).

Btw, a lot of countries use legislation or "FDA" style measures to protect their markets.. such as legislation against "hormone injected beef", or genetically modified vegatables and fruits. This in spite of the fact that few vegetables or fruits bear any close resemblance to their ancient ancestors due to genetic modifications through selective breeding or hybridization, or the fact that producing stronger breeds of animals naturally produce more hormones than THEIR ancestors.

Voodoo science is just as much a detriment to free-trade as any tariff, and usually far more exclusionary.

Ron
