PC Sales in 4th Week of June See Double Digit Increase
July 17, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC sales at retail stores in Japan in the fourth week of June rose more than 10 percent over the previous week in terms of units and value.

Although PC sales were lackluster in the third week of June, the sales rose again in the fourth week of the month as the summer shopping season went into full swing and new models were marketed.

According to a survey conducted by GfK Japan Ltd., PC sales for the fourth week of June 2000 (June 19 - 25, 2000) increased 11.8 percent in units and 11.1 percent in value from the previous week. The average retail sales price was 196,562 yen, down 1,283 yen from 197,845 yen in the previous week. (107.28 yen = US$1)

GfK Japan Ltd. handles POS data for 3,200 large electric home-appliance retail stores in Japan.

Compared with the turnover for the same week a year earlier (June 21 - 27, 1999), PC sales increased 54.8 percent in units and rose 38.5 percent in value.

Popular models of NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Sony Corp. and other makers are still seeing brisk sales. Also, new models put on sale in June were selling at a brisk pace. Those include the Presario3571 of Compaq KK, a desk-top/tower PC with a JBL speaker system built in, and the ThinkPad i series 1161-234, a low-priced notebook PC from IBM Japan Ltd.
