hi kaycee

and welcome to the thread.

i see what you mean about those weird content.ie5 folders. i can tell you how to get rid of what's in them real easily. but i can't say for sure what you should do (or if you should do) with the folders themselves. my thinking is that since they are in the temporary internet files folder, you could delete them and they'd probably regenerate. in fact, kaycee, if no one else comes along and tells us that they know for sure what's up with those content.ie5 folders, i'll drop in on a microsoft newsgroup and see if i can find out more.

in the meantime, it's not like there is anything wrong. i have four or five of them myself, with names like 2bc50fyi and 7z9st3d5. and if you open them, you'll note that they all contain about the same files as are found in the content.ie5 folder and in the temporary internet files folder.

anyway, to make all of the files (not folders) go away easily, you can go to 'tools' on the ie taskbar, select 'internet options', then click the 'advanced' tab and scroll down to 'security'. there you'll find (about 4 choices down) a box that says 'empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed'. check that box, click 'apply' then ok. this will delete the contents of these folders each time you close ie5.

we'll probably hear some more about these content.ie5 folders from those folks on the thread who like ms browser. i'm a netscape fan myself.

hope this helps

:)

mark

I don't think this stuff is (are) files.

In your Windows\Tempor~1 folder, you'd only have a singe file INDEX.DAT of considerable size. If you looked at this folder with Explorer, you'd see many icons and filenames, giving the appearance of folders and files -- this is an illusion.

So ... what you're seeing is a Windows 'special case' where Windows creates what it needs and presents the results in a familiar format to reduce confusion. Unfortunately, this is simpler in only the most superficial way, and when one digs deeper, as you have done, the situation becomes even more confusing.

No need to re-format --- Boot to MS-DOS 'safe mode' and delete \Windows\Tempor~1\index.dat and you'll get a fresh empty file on your next boot to Windows. You'll also see a few familiar filenames and folders if you examine your system with Explorer.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. You can accomplish much the same thing, and easier, by deleting temporary internet files through the 'Internet Options...' tools of IE.
