Ralf: SUNW hasn't ignored Windows NT. They want to sell servers to companies that are using this OS, however, UNIX is the basis and always will be the basis of SUNW's strategy.

Also, McNealy has conceded that MSFT has some great applications, however, he draws the line at OS's.

I believe that the success of JAVA has started to blunt the effect of the Windows hegemony. The most important reason for the success of SUNW is their insistence on "Open" systems.

Open systems are the reason for the success of SUNW. This is what MSFT has tried time and time again to compete against with their "closed" systems.

I see SUNW becoming a "franchise" company eventually like IBM and HWP, but I do not feel that they are there yet. They need to develop their service and maintenance profit centers much better than they are doing right now.

The best thing about SUNW's model is that they do not compete with their customers, like INTC and HWP do.
