One thing that is interesting is that the WBVN biz
model is apparently actually going to work. i.e. they
have said that later this year they expect their
first warehouse to break even EBIDTA-wise. And that is
after only like 5 or 6 quarters of operation. And the
other warehouses such as Atlanta are experiencing even
more rapid acceptance/growth. So it might not be a
big money pit after they manage to get enough of the
warehouses profitable enough to fund further growth.

As for AMZN, why couldn't they simply treat it as more
warehouse space and stock their goods there first thing
from the manufacturers.. I don't see why they would need
to ship stuff there from their "main" warehouses.

Having such a monopoly on delivery might also help AMZN
to escape being valued as strictly a retailer ?
