Japan LDP's Shiozaki Questions BOJ's Policy Decision

TOKYO (Dow Jones/Nikkei)--Yasuhisa Shiozaki, a current member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and a former Bank of Japan official, questioned late Monday the central bank's decision to keep its zero interest rate policy unchanged despite favorable conditions for a rate hike.

In an interview, Shiozaki said current economic conditions, such as rises in material prices and advertisement charges, were probably favorable for a rate hike Monday.

However, BOJ policy board members apparently faced pressure from their "former affiliations" to keep the zero interest rate policy, he said, adding that this shows a lack of independence of the central bank.

Shiozaki also questioned the appropriateness of Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori's call Friday at a press conference for the keeping of the zero interest rate policy.
